Biography

Nightwish was founded in Kitee, Finland in 1996 by keyboardist and songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. Initially an acoustic folk project, the band evolved into one of the defining acts of symphonic metal, combining the power of traditional metal with full orchestral arrangements and operatic vocals.

The band’s story has been marked by dramatic vocalist changes — from Tarja Turunen’s dismissal after a sold-out tour to Anette Olzon’s departure during a tour to Floor Jansen’s permanent appointment — yet each era has produced acclaimed albums. Decades of Darkness and Endless Forms Most Beautiful stand as particular highlights.
