Black metal’s second wave, centered in Norway in the early 1990s, created one of metal’s most enduring and controversial subcultures. Bands like Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, and Emperor defined the genre’s raw, cold aesthetic — a stark contrast to the polished production of contemporaneous metal.
The genre has since branched into countless sub-styles, from atmospheric and post-black metal to symphonic and folk-influenced variants.
